More news from Newalbumville.

So, we’ve had a pretty busy weekend! We spent almost all our weekend in Bibbi’s old music school, which we had borrowed for the occasion.

We started recording again on Saturday. We got 2 violin players and 1 viola player who together made a string quartet with Hildur. Luckily they’ve played together before (Ólafur Arnalds’s string quartet) so it sounded really good.

We started out the session by plotting a little bit. It was Ingibjörg’s birthday so we had the string quartet start the session out with playing Happy Birthday for Ingibjörg. Ingibjörg’s face was priceless!

The string quartet got to work their magic in lots of places and we are really happy with the outcome!

The next day we got two wonderful brass girls (pun intended, they are from Björk’s Wonderbrass!) They played french horn and trombone.

We did a good session with them. Then we finished recording all the cello for the album. And by that we finished all the instruments. Now its only voices!

——

Today we then started recording the vocals. It’s so amazing to see the songs finally come together with the last parts of the songs. It kind of feels like being a kid on Christmas, eager to open more presents!

We’ll share some videos with you soon :)

Studio, day 4.

Yesterday we recorded lots of fun stuff.

Celeste, piano, harmonium and we actually made some singing arrangements where everyone in the band sung. Pretty fun.

Now we’re just sitting and watching Alex and Biggi work their magic on the recordings.

Here are some photos.

Studio, day 3.

Hey there,

Live report here from Sundlaugin studio!

It’s now day 3 and we’ve got a lot of things going on.

We got down the basic tracks(guitar, bass, drums) to all of the songs on the album on day 1 and 2.

So today we started doing the fun stuff. We’ve been recording acoustic guitar and piano today, and the songs are beginning to sound really good.

It’s so cool to have the piano because Bibbi actually just got a degree in piano playing from a music school this spring and he’s so talented. It’s pretty unbelievable that we haven’t used that before.

We’re trying to take photos as we go and record some videos but sometimes it’s hard to remember when you’re having a blast… :)

We have one day left here in Sundlaugin and then we’re going to start recording string arrangements and voice few days later.

But stay tuned, we’ll get you updated soon again!

All the best,

Hildur // Rökkurró

This here fella is our favorite just when we need a laugh.

Me & Árni found some time in between being on endless amount of rehearsals for the Rökkurró album recordings to make this cover song video. This is the 4th in a series of Youtube covers we’ve been making.

Pre-production - pictures from last week!

Last week we started pre-production for our new album. Alex (Alex Somers of Riceboy Sleeps) has been coming to practices and helping us develop the songs. He´s been a really big help and has pushed us to try thing that we probably would never have done except for him. His help has been priceless.

Last week we basicly had to finish the album. We only had 6 finished songs and what seemed like a million half-finished ideas. Alex helped us filter through what was good and what not. We ended up with 9 songs.

We seriously can´t wait to start. We have a really good feeling about this.

Iceland Airwaves

This picture was in the online version of Das Spiegel, the biggest newspaper in Germany.

Barely two weeks ago we played at the Iceland Airwaves festival for the third time (and our first with our handsome new guitarist Axel). This time around we were playing in this huge venue called Hafnarhúsið, which normally serves as an art gallery.

We also played two off venue shows: in 12 Tónar and at the Reykjavík Downtown Hostel

Loads of people showed up and good times were had.

Here are some of the reviews:

Fimmtudagurinn var hafinn og eftir að hafa fengið sér nokkra bjóra í heimahúsi fóru Rjómaliðar á stjá til að taka þátt í hátíðinni. Rökkurró hófu leikinn í Hafnarhúsinu klukkan hálf átta. Þetta var nú hálf undarlegt val á stað fyrir bandið, enda kommentaði söngkonan á það sjálf: sagðist hafa nýlokið við að spila í minnstu plötubúð heims, 12 Tónum. Hverju sem því líður naut tónlist Rökkurróar sér vel í hljómmiklum salnum. Hljómsveitin flutti einungis nýtt efni (eða a.m.k. óútgefið) og lofar það skrambi góðu! Hildur Kristín syngur að vanda alveg eins og engill og tónar vel við tilfinningaþrungna músíkina. Meðlimir bandsins voru iðnir við að skiptast á að spila á hin ýmsu hljóðfæri og var ekki að heyra að nein falsnóta væri slegin. Leiðinlegt að fleiri skyldu ekki koma og sjá, því tónleikarnir voru mjög flottir og framkoman sérstaklega einlæg og hrífandi.

Due to some unforeseen problems, I showed up as Rökkurró were almost done with their set. What I caught, I liked, as is to be expected when this band is involved. Even though belonging to the ‘cute’ scene, Rökkurró don’t stop there. Offering a variety of beautifully written lyrics (my biggest attraction to the band), interesting songs and a wonderful collection of instruments (cello, accordion, saxophone) Rökkurró are definitely worth the while

Now, I’ve got to admit, I don’t really know where these guys are coming from, I don’t know a lot of music like this, but what I know is – it’s pretty comfortable. Nice.

I emerged, ears ringing from that living room style concert (with no volume sacrificed) and headed directly to 12 Tonar to see most of Rokkurro’s set of cello-led gentle pop songs. They were soothing as ever and held those in attendance enthralled and then delighted (me especially) when they threw in the odd moment of rocking out, it’s a style that really suits them. Amusingly, as they played their last note, and said their thank-yous the audience was silent for about 10 or 15 seconds, as if nobody wanted to be the first to break the moment. Eventually everybody got the courage, mostly to say “did you know they are on again in an hour at the art museum?”. A triumph then!

We were honored to have Rökkurró as our third act of the day. If you haven’t heard them yet, you are missing out on some of the best Icelandic music you can find!
